Yes, there are some startup costs that you're gonna need to factor in. Number one, if you're really serious about it, you're gonna want to hire a lawyer and an accountant to look at the <span style="font-weight:700;">franchise agreement</span> and make sure that your business plan is set up for success.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;</div></div>
<div><br></div><div><div>Some of the hard costs that you'll need to factor in are the franchise fee, the royalty fees, and any other fees that the franchise may charge. Good news is that all of these costs are laid out in hard paper for you to review in a document called the <span style="font-weight:700;">FDD</span>, the <span style="font-weight:700;">Franchise Disclosure Document</span>. So there should never be any surprise or unexpected costs and you're going to know upfront in item seven exactly what costs you are gonna need to know about. We highly suggest spending the dime and hiring an attorney here, particularly since it’s a fraction of what you will invest in your franchise. We can give you the basics, and certainly arm you with a long list of questions for the franchisor during your discovery if you want to go it alone.</span></p></li></ol><br><ol start="7"><li style="font-size:11pt;"><p><span style="font-size:18px;"><span style="font-weight:700;">Investment</span> - The “F” word: Financials. Yikes! “Show me the money” is what the franchisor is going to look for early on in the process. Make sure you are adequately funded. Do us a favor if you are going to hire us to help you through this journey, or not, please DO NOT overstate or understate your financials. This will only delay the process while the franchisor verifies everything. So all the money that the owners make from their business is theirs to keep.</span></p></li><li style="font-size:10.5pt;"><p style="text-align:left;"><span style="font-size:18px;">The cost It’s all basically determined by a one-time startup fee based on the amount of equipment/products that person wants to purchase upfront, coupled with a proven business program.</span></p></li><li style="font-size:10.5pt;"><p style="text-align:left;"><span style="font-size:18px;">It generally means, as a biz op, there are no restrictive territories.</span></p></li><li style="font-size:10.5pt;"><p style="text-align:left;"><span style="font-size:18px;">It also generally means that a biz op owner can work with any clients, no matter where they come from. So basically no protection on clients, prospects and territories.</span></p></li><li style="font-size:10.5pt;"><p style="text-align:left;"><span style="font-size:18px;">Biz ops don’t have an Franchise Disclosure Document (FDD) Item 19 to deal with. However, most still offer a company profile. It has all of the same kind of information in it and protections offered through state and federal disclosures, just like you would get with a franchise. Most allow a candidate to validate all of company profile information with other owners as they work through the process.</span></p></li><li style="font-size:10.5pt;"><p style="text-align:left;"><span style="font-size:18px;">A biz op start-to-finish sales process to start up is usually a much quicker process than that of a franchise.</span></p></li><li style="font-size:10.5pt;"><p style="text-align:left;"><span style="font-size:18px;">Biz op owners get to call it their own business name, they use their own website, and their own marketing pieces.</span></p></li><li style="font-size:10.5pt;"><p style="text-align:left;"><span style="font-size:18px;">Biz op owners get to determine how they run their business day-to-day, and how much help and training they want to undertake (generally with no requirements).</span></p></li></ol><p style="text-align:left;"><span style="font-size:18px;">So if you are evaluating whether to look at a <span style="font-weight:700;">business opportunity</span> (biz op) versus a franchise, it is important to know your own strengths and weaknesses. So the questions that you ask are very important, especially in that initial conversation.</span></p><br><p><span style="font-size:13.5pt;">Here are the top 7 questions we encourage our clients to ask franchisors on their initial interview:</span></p><ul><li style="font-size:13.5pt;"><p><span style="font-size:13.5pt;font-weight:700;">What are the trends in this industry?</span></p></li></ul><p><span style="font-size:13.5pt;">You want to understand if the industry is growing and if so, what are some of the factors contributing to that (ex: demographics, geography, regulations, etc.</span></p><ul><li style="font-size:13.5pt;"><p><span style="font-size:13.5pt;font-weight:700;">Who are your biggest competitors?</span><span style="font-size:13.5pt;">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</span></p></li></ul><p><span style="font-size:13.5pt;">Competition is good. It means there’s a market for the products or services being offered. Understand who the competition is and what the franchisor is doing to differentiate itself as the leader.</span></p><ul><li style="font-size:13.5pt;"><p><span style="font-size:13.5pt;font-weight:700;">What support do you provide to franchisees?</span></p></li></ul><p><span style="font-size:13.5pt;">You’re not only buying the rights to use the brand/name when you invest in a franchise, you’re also investing in support and training. Understand what types of training and support the franchisor provides (ex: virtual, in-person), when and how training/support is provided, and what the structure of that support/training looks like (ex: some franchisors provide it only on a national level, some regional, some local.</span></p><ul><li style="font-size:13.5pt;"><p><span style="font-size:13.5pt;font-weight:700;">How do you support franchisees with marketing?</span></p></li></ul><p><span style="font-size:13.5pt;">Remember you want to be in business FOR yourself, not BY yourself. This section of the FDD discloses information that helps you determine “how much can I make in this business?” Every franchise will disclose financial information in a different way, so take the time to review it and if necessary ask your accountant to help you review it.</div><div><br></div><div>Do not sign a contract or pay any money until you have had the opportunity to review the Franchise Disclosure Document (FDD). Do not skip this step! Where many aspiring franchise owners stumble is they think the franchise disclosure document is a contract. It’s not. It’s just a document that discloses information on the franchise so you can review it and make an informed decision. When you’re ready to move forward, you will sign a franchise agreement.&nbsp; Also, remember that oral statements and promises that are not in the disclosure statement, legally, mean nothing.</div><div><br></div><div><div>3. <span style="font-weight:700;">Do your homework</span></div></div><div><br></div><div>Avoid high-pressure sales tactics, and don't purchase anything in a hurry. Legitimate franchisor companies will expect you to investigate their offering and comparison shop with other franchises.</div><div><br></div><div>Take the time to speak with other franchisees. Understand the good and the not so good. What makes the top performers so successful? Why are some franchisees not performing as well? Learn from the best so that you can emulate what they’re doing. Know that those who are not successful are usually because they’re not following the franchise system.</div><div><br></div><div>Most franchises and business opportunities involve a significant investment. Take the time and spend the money to seek competent legal advice before investing your money.
